Macrochaetus longipes is a representative of the phylum Rotifera, family Trichotriidae. While primarily aquatic organisms, they are of interest in agronomy due to their presence in hydroponic systems and around the rhizosphere of aquatic or moisture-loving plants, where they interact with the micro-ecosystem of the root zone.

The organism is characterized by its distinct, elongated bristles which provide mobility and protection. In controlled environments such as greenhouses or hydroponic farms, Macrochaetus longipes can become a biological factor that impacts the overall health of the root system if the microbial balance of the solution is compromised.

The life cycle of this species is characterized by high reproductive rates through parthenogenesis under favorable conditions. They feed primarily on organic detritus, bacteria, and small algae.
