The alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is a large freshwater reptile that is considered a significant biological threat in the context of aquaculture and agricultural water management. Systematically, it belongs to the order Testudines and the family Chelydridae.

The primary area of damage caused by this species involves artificial ponds, fish farming reservoirs, and irrigation systems connected to open water sources. These turtles actively predate on fish fry, commercially valuable aquatic species, and can severely damage hydraulic structures by digging deep burrows into dikes and embankments.

The biology of this species is characterized by high adaptability. Adult individuals are predominantly bottom-dwellers, using a specialized worm-like lure on their tongue to attract prey. The life cycle involves a slow growth rate, with sexual maturity reached only after 10–12 years. In adverse conditions, these turtles can survive for extended periods without food, which complicates control efforts.

The nature of the damage includes a sharp decline in fish populations within stocked ponds. Beyond direct consumption of aquaculture stocks, these turtles destroy the feeding environment and can inflict physical injuries on fish that are too large to swallow. Their aggressive nature and cryptic lifestyle make them a challenging invasive factor in commercial aquatic environments.

Control and protection measures include a comprehensive strategy:

  • Installation of specialized mesh barriers to prevent the entry of large reptiles into ponds.
  • Regular monitoring and removal of individuals using specialized trap nets.
  • Reinforcement of shorelines and dams with concrete structures to prevent burrowing.
  • Biological management of fish stock composition to reduce the attractiveness of the reservoir to predators.
