Systematic position. Macrolabis is a genus of insects belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae, commonly known as gall midges. These insects are characterized by their ability to induce abnormal tissue growth, known as galls, in their host plants, providing a niche for larval development.

Affected crops and economic impact. These pests affect various plant species, including ornamental, wild, and agricultural crops. The damage caused by Macrolabis involves the disruption of normal plant physiology, leading to inhibited growth, malformation of foliage, and a reduction in the overall vigor and aesthetic or commercial value of the crop.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Macrolabis is intricately linked to the phenology of its host plant. Adult females lay eggs on young, growing tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae secrete substances that trigger the plant to form a gall. The larvae feed and develop within these protective structures before pupating, often undergoing multiple generations per year under favorable conditions.

Damage patterns. Visual symptoms of an infestation include leaf rolling, swelling, or the presence of distinct gall formations on leaves and stems. As the larvae consume plant nutrients within the gall, the surrounding plant tissue may yellow or necrotize. Severe infestations can cause significant stunting of young shoots and interfere with proper flower or fruit development.

Control measures. Controlling Macrolabis is challenging due to the larvae residing inside the plant tissue. Effective strategies include:
