Beech gall midge

Macrolabis luceti is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). These small flies are known for inducing the formation of galls, which are abnormal outgrowths on plant tissues. This particular species is highly host-specific, primarily targeting the European beech tree, and plays a significant role in forest entomology.

The primary host plant for this pest is the European beech (Fagus sylvatica). The larvae feed on the young leaves of the tree, which can cause substantial damage in nurseries and forest stands. While mature trees can often withstand moderate infestations, young saplings and seedlings are particularly vulnerable, suffering from reduced growth rates and compromised health.

The life cycle of the beech gall midge is finely tuned to the phenology of the beech tree. Females deposit eggs into developing buds or unfolding leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae release secretions that cause the plant to form a protective gall. The larvae develop within this gall, consuming the nutritious tissue stimulated by their presence until they reach maturity.

Infestation symptoms are characterized by distinct leaf deformations and galls that appear as curled or thickened patches on the leaf blades. These injuries interfere with photosynthesis and can lead to chlorosis or premature leaf drop in severe cases. Frequent or heavy attacks significantly weaken the tree's vigor and can lead to growth stagnation.
