Macrolabis molesta is a small insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). As a specialized phytophagous species, it induces the formation of galls on its host plants. These galls provide the necessary shelter and nutrient-rich environment for the larval stages to complete their development, making the pest difficult to reach with standard contact treatments.

The primary hosts for Macrolabis molesta include various medicinal and aromatic plants, particularly those in the Linum genus. The larvae focus their feeding activity on the reproductive organs, specifically targeting buds and developing ovaries. This behavior prevents the plant from setting seed, leading to stunted development and significant loss of biomass or harvestable raw materials.
