The oak gall midge, Macrolabis quercicola, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. These minute insects are specialized plant parasites that induce the formation of galls on the leaves of oak trees. While the adult midges are transient, the larval stages are significant bio-factors that fundamentally alter the plant physiology in localized areas.

The primary host for this species is the oak tree (Quercus genus). The larvae feed specifically on the developing leaf tissues. By injecting substances during feeding, they manipulate the plant's growth hormones, causing the formation of abnormal growths or galls, which serve both as a permanent food supply and as a protective shelter against predators and harsh climate.
