Macrolophus costalis

Macrolophus costalis is a species of mirid bug (Miridae) belonging to the order Hemiptera. While some members of this genus are beneficial predators, Macrolophus costalis can become a pest in specific agricultural systems, particularly when biological imbalances occur within greenhouse environments, leading to significant pressure on cultivated crops.

The primary hosts for this pest include a range of Solanaceous crops, most notably tomatoes, eggplants, and bell peppers. The bugs prefer to feed on the most tender parts of the plant, such as growing tips, developing flower buds, and young foliage, which can severely impact the vigor of the plant during its critical developmental stages.

The biology and lifecycle of this species are highly dependent on environmental conditions. It undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Females typically deposit their eggs inside the plant tissue, protecting them from environmental stressors and many direct-contact chemical treatments, which complicates population management.

The damage caused by Macrolophus costalis results from their piercing-sucking mouthparts. As they extract cell contents, they leave behind small chlorotic spots. Over time, these spots can necrotize, causing leaves to curl, yellow, or drop prematurely. The loss of photosynthetic area and the disruption of nutrient transport significantly reduce the overall yield and fruit quality.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Prevention is key to avoiding outbreaks that could threaten crop yield. Recommended strategies include:

• Continuous monitoring using yellow sticky traps to track population density.
• Maintaining proper greenhouse sanitation by removing weeds and crop debris.
