Description

Macrolophus pygmaeus is a predatory mirid bug widely used in greenhouse agriculture as a biological control agent for whiteflies and spider mites. However, it is classified as a semi-predatory species, meaning it can shift its diet to plant tissues if its primary prey sources become scarce or if its population grows too dense.

Systematically, this insect belongs to the order Hemiptera. The adult bug is small, typically 3 to 4 mm in length, with a slender, pale green body. This coloration provides excellent camouflage against the foliage of host plants, such as tomatoes and eggplants, allowing the insect to blend into the canopy.

The life cycle of the bug consists of an egg stage, five nymphal stages, and the adult phase. Females insert their eggs into the leaf veins or stems of the host plant. The development speed is highly temperature-dependent, and in warm greenhouse environments, the species can complete multiple generations within a single growing season.

Damage to plants occurs when the bug begins feeding on plant fluids due to a lack of prey. Both nymphs and adults use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to damage leaves, stems, and fruits. On tomatoes, this activity manifests as small necrotic spots on the fruit surface, which significantly reduces the market value and quality of the yield.

Effective management strategies focus on monitoring population levels. To prevent damage, growers should ensure a consistent supply of prey or provide supplemental feeding if necessary. If the population density becomes excessive and plant damage occurs, targeted chemical interventions may be required, provided they comply with the integrated pest management (IPM) protocols.
