Description

Taxonomic position: The Iris borer (Macronoctua onusta) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a highly specialized pest known primarily for its destructive impact on various species and cultivars within the genus Iris, often causing significant damage to garden landscapes.

Host plants: The pest primarily infests irises, including bearded and beardless varieties. While other related plants may occasionally be attacked, the iris is the principal host where the larvae complete their life cycle, causing the most significant devastation to established root systems.

Biology and life cycle: This insect has a single generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs typically laid on iris foliage and plant debris during the late summer and autumn. In spring, the eggs hatch into larvae that initially feed on the surface of the leaves before boring into the stems and descending into the rhizomes.

Damage and pest status: Early symptoms include small, translucent spots and notched edges on leaves. As the larvae grow larger, they tunnel into the rhizome, hollowing it out. This damage frequently facilitates the entry of soft rot bacteria, which destroys the rhizome entirely, leading to the rapid collapse and death of the iris plant.

Control measures: Management strategies emphasize cultural practices, such as the thorough removal and destruction of all iris debris in late autumn to eliminate overwintering eggs. During the spring growth period, monitoring is crucial. Applications of systemic insecticides are most effective when applied early in the season, before the larvae successfully penetrate the protected inner tissues of the stem.
