Description
The iris borer (Macronoctua onusta) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests specifically targeting iris plants, with larvae causing extensive structural damage to the rhizomes and foliage.
These insects primarily infest various species of bearded irises. While originally native to North America, they have become a significant concern for ornamental plant growers, as their infestation often leads to secondary infections by soft rot bacteria, which rapidly kill the plant.
The life cycle of the iris borer consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage on old iris leaves or debris. In early spring, the larvae hatch and immediately begin feeding on the leaf tissue, creating visible mining patterns before boring downward into the rhizome.
Typical damage includes small holes and translucent spots on leaves, followed by dark, wet rot within the rhizome. Gardeners often notice the presence of the larvae when the base of the plant becomes mushy and emits a strong, unpleasant odor due to the accompanying bacterial decay.
Effective control strategies require a combination of sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing and destroying old iris foliage in late autumn is crucial to eliminate overwintering eggs. In spring, when larvae are active but have not yet reached the rhizome, systemic insecticides are the most effective method for protection.
