Description
The raspberry leafhopper (Macropsis fuscula) is a small insect belonging to the family Cicadellidae. It is a well-known pest that specifically targets Rubus species, primarily raspberries and blackberries, posing a significant risk to fruit production in temperate climates.
The host range is largely confined to raspberry and blackberry plants. Both nymphs and adults feed by inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissue to extract xylem and phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and weakens its overall immune system.
The life cycle of Macropsis fuscula is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The winter is spent in the egg stage, with eggs embedded beneath the bark of young raspberry canes. Hatching typically occurs in the spring, and adults are active throughout the summer months until autumn.
The impact of this pest is twofold. Direct damage appears as chlorotic spots, leaf yellowing, and curling, followed by premature leaf drop. Indirectly, these insects are significant vectors of viral diseases, most notably the raspberry leaf curl virus, which can render entire plantations unproductive over time.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling this pest. Cultural practices, such as removing infested canes during winter pruning, are essential. When populations exceed economic thresholds, applying selective insecticides during the nymphal stage is the most effective approach for maintaining healthy crop growth.
