Scott's willow leafhopper

Systematic position. The Scott's willow leafhopper (Macropsis scotti) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Cicadellidae. This species is a specialized pest frequently found in forest and ornamental plantings, preferring specific types of tree species for its development and feeding activities.

Affected crops. The main hosts for feeding and reproduction of this species are various willow species (Salix spp.). Under conditions of high population density, this leafhopper can cause significant damage to nurseries, shelterbelts, and ornamental plantings in park zones where susceptible willow varieties are grown.

Biology and life cycle. The insect's life cycle is closely linked to the phenology of the willow. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited by females under the bark of thin shoots. In the spring, as temperatures stabilize, larvae hatch and pass through several instars, feeding on the sap of young leaves and soft shoots. Adult insects (imagos) emerge by mid-summer.

Damage patterns and economic impact. As they feed, leafhoppers suck cell sap from plant tissues. This causes leaf deformation, curling, and premature yellowing. Furthermore, necrosis often develops at the puncture sites, which negatively impacts photosynthesis and the overall growth of young shoots, reducing the aesthetic value and vitality of the trees.
