Willow leafhopper

Macropsis scutellatus is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Known commonly as a type of willow leafhopper, this pest is primarily associated with various species of willow trees (Salix spp.), making it a significant concern for arborists and forestry managers who maintain willow-rich landscapes.

The primary host plants for this pest include various willow varieties. While mature trees can often withstand moderate infestations, young plants, nursery stock, and ornamental willow cultivars are particularly susceptible to damage, which can lead to stunted growth and loss of aesthetic appeal.

The life cycle of the willow leafhopper is well-adapted to the phenology of its host. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded under the bark of young twigs. Larvae emerge in the spring coinciding with bud break, and they proceed to feed on the sap of the emerging leaves and shoots throughout the summer months.

Feeding activity causes characteristic yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves, curling, and a general reduction in plant vigor.
