Wormwood aphid

Systematic position: The wormwood aphid (Macrosiphoniella artemisiae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with the Artemisia genus. These insects are highly adapted to feeding on the sap of these plants and have developed specific biological strategies to exploit their host effectively.

Affected crops: While primarily infesting various species of wormwood (Artemisia), this aphid species may occasionally spread to other related ornamental plants in the Asteraceae family. The infestations are typically localized on the growing tips, undersides of leaves, and young stems, where the concentration of nutrients is the highest.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Macrosiphoniella artemisiae is characterized by alternating generations. They overwinter in the egg stage on the host plant remnants. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge, followed by several successive generations of wingless and winged females. The ability to produce winged individuals allows the population to disperse rapidly during the peak growing season.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: By extracting sap, these aphids cause significant physiological stress to the plant.
