The meadowsweet aphid (Macrosiphum cholodkovskyi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. Due to its host specificity, it is often found in landscapes and gardens where these ornamental shrubs are cultivated.
This pest targets the most succulent parts of the host plant, particularly young shoots, developing leaves, and inflorescences. By forming dense colonies on these tissues, the aphid continuously extracts plant fluids, which leads to a significant loss of vigor and can stunt the overall growth of the infected shrub.
The biological cycle of this species is typical for aphids, involving both sexual and asexual phases. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, with eggs attached to the bark of Spiraea stems. As spring approaches, the eggs hatch into fundatrices. Throughout the summer, successive generations of wingless and winged females are produced, enabling efficient colonization of new plant tissues.
Damage symptoms include severe curling and deformation of leaves, yellowing of foliage, and reduced flower production. A critical aspect of their harmfulness is the secretion of honeydew, a sugary substance that serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This mold creates a black coating on leaves, which interferes with photosynthesis and ruins the appearance of the ornamental plant.
Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. It is recommended to inspect shrubs regularly for early signs of infestation. Mechanical removal of infested tips can be effective for minor outbreaks. For larger populations, systemic insecticides are the most reliable solution. Additionally, maintaining high biodiversity in the garden will support natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings that feed on aphids.
