Taxonomic position: The blackberry aphid (Macrosiphum funestum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialist feeder that has evolved to exclusively exploit plants within the Rosaceae family, specifically those in the Rubus genus.

Host plants: This pest primarily attacks cultivated blackberry varieties. While it is sometimes observed on wild raspberries, its economic impact is most pronounced in commercial blackberry production, where it clusters on tender vegetative growth, flower buds, and the underside of leaves.

Biology and life cycle: Like many aphids, this species exhibits a complex life cycle. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage on the bark and near the buds of host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, which initiate rapid asexual reproduction. Several generations occur throughout the growing season until sexual forms emerge in late autumn to produce overwintering eggs.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Feeding damage manifests as stunted growth, leaf curling, and yellowing of the foliage. The continuous extraction of phloem sap drains the plant's resources, leading to reduced berry yield and quality. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which can cover the plant surface, blocking light and interfering with respiration.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies involve:

• Regular field monitoring to detect early colony establishment.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ladybirds, lacewings, and hoverflies.
