Description
Systematic position. Macrosiphum gei (commonly classified under the Macrosiphum euphorbiae complex) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a highly adaptable species known for its rapid colonization rates in temperate and subtropical agricultural environments.
Affected crops. This aphid is a significant pest for the Solanaceae family, including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. It also thrives on various legumes, roses, lettuce, and numerous weeds, making it a persistent challenge throughout the entire growing season.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves both sexual and asexual reproduction phases. During the growing season, females reproduce parthenogenetically, giving birth to live nymphs. The population growth is exponential, with the emergence of winged morphs facilitating migration to new host plants when the population density becomes high.
Type of damage and harmfulness. Direct damage occurs through sap depletion, which causes leaf curling, chlorosis, and general stunting of the plant. However, its role as a primary vector for many plant pathogenic viruses, such as Potato Virus Y (PVY), makes it one of the most economically damaging pests in potato and tomato production.
Management and control. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:
- monitoring using yellow sticky traps;
- maintaining field hygiene and removing alternative weed hosts;
- applying systemic insecticides when economic thresholds are met;
- encouraging natural predators like lady beetles and parasitic wasps.
