Description

The greenhouse aphid, scientifically known as Macrosiphum hibernaculorum, is a specialized pest primarily affecting indoor and greenhouse-grown plants. It belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. Unlike many other aphids that rely on seasonal changes, this species is perfectly adapted to the stable environmental conditions of greenhouses, allowing it to remain active throughout the year.

This pest colonizes a wide variety of ornamental and greenhouse plants. It displays a strong preference for actively growing meristematic tissues, such as emerging shoots and the underside of leaves. By feeding in these areas, the aphid gains easy access to plant phloem sap, which is rich in nutrients essential for its rapid development and reproduction.

The life cycle of Macrosiphum hibernaculorum is characterized by continuous parthenogenetic reproduction in greenhouse conditions. This means that females produce live offspring without the need for fertilization, leading to exponential population growth. Under optimal temperatures, a single generation can reach maturity within a few days, allowing a population to infest an entire greenhouse rapidly.

The damage caused by these aphids is significant. As they pierce plant tissues to feed, they induce chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and impairs photosynthesis. This reduces the aesthetic value of ornamental plants and can ultimately lead to the death of highly sensitive or young specimens.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Preventive measures, such as monitoring new plants for signs of infestation and maintaining strict sanitary practices, are crucial. Biocontrol agents like parasitic wasps and ladybeetles are often effective in closed systems. When chemical control is necessary, choosing systemic insecticides and applying them thoroughly to the underside of the leaves is the most effective approach to mitigate population outbreaks.
