Melampyrum aphid

The Melampyrum aphid (lat. Macrosiphum melampyri) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. As its scientific name suggests, this species is highly specialized, feeding primarily on plants within the Melampyrum genus, commonly known as cow-wheat. It is a distinct member of the aphid family that plays a specific role in local ecosystems.

The biology and lifecycle of Macrosiphum melampyri involve rapid reproduction cycles. During the growing season, populations expand via parthenogenesis, where females produce live young without mating. This allows the aphid to exploit favorable environmental conditions effectively. They overwinter in the egg stage, typically found on the lower parts of host plants or in soil debris, ensuring the species survives winter temperatures.

The primary damage caused by this pest is the extraction of phloem sap from the succulent parts of the plant, including young stems and leaves.
