Description
The raspberry aphid (Macrosiphum rubi) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a common and destructive pest that specifically targets plants within the Rubus genus, particularly raspberries and blackberries.
The pest primarily infests the soft tissues of the plants, such as young shoots, leaf undersides, and inflorescences. During the active growing season, these aphids feed on plant sap, significantly weakening the physiological state of the host plant.
The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs on the stems of raspberry canes. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into nymphs, which rapidly develop into adults. Through rapid parthenogenesis, the aphid population can grow exponentially within a few weeks, especially in warm and humid conditions.
Direct damage includes leaf curling, stunted shoot growth, and distorted berries, which severely reduces the yield quality. Indirect damage is often more critical: Macrosiphum rubi is a known vector for various plant viruses, such as raspberry mosaic virus, which can render entire plantations unproductive over time.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization, regular pruning to improve air circulation, and the judicious use of selective insecticides. Protecting natural predators, such as ladybugs and lacewings, is also highly recommended to maintain biological balance in the field.
