Description
Systematic position. The Aster leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrilineatus and related species within the Macrosteles genus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These insects are significant agricultural pests known globally for their mobility and role as disease vectors.
Crops and economic impact. These leafhoppers feed on a wide variety of plants, including cereals, vegetables, forage crops, and ornamentals. The most serious economic damage is caused by the transmission of plant pathogens, particularly phytoplasmas, which lead to stunted growth and yellowing of the foliage.
Biology and life cycle. Macrosteles species undergo incomplete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as eggs in perennial grasses or as nymphs and adults in winter crops. In warmer seasons, they produce several generations, with population peaks often occurring in mid-summer when environmental conditions are optimal for rapid development.
Nature of damage. Direct feeding damage includes yellowing, curling, and necrosis of leaves as the insects extract plant sap. However, their primary threat is the transmission of systemic viruses. Plants infected via leafhopper feeding often exhibit severe physiological disorders, resulting in poor development and drastically reduced yields.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Aster leafhoppers. Effective strategies include:
- Regular monitoring using yellow sticky traps to track population density.
- Eliminating weed hosts that act as reservoirs for phytoplasmas.
- Using row covers or reflective mulches for high-value vegetable crops.
- Applying systemic insecticides when the pest threshold is exceeded to prevent vector transmission.
