Sugarcane spittlebug

Mahanarva fimbriolata, commonly known as the sugarcane spittlebug, is a prominent pest species within the order Hemiptera and the family Cercopidae. It is widely recognized as a major economic threat to sugarcane plantations, primarily in South and Central America, where it can cause widespread crop failure.

The primary host for this pest is sugarcane, although it has been documented feeding on various grass species. Adults and nymphs cause damage by extracting sap from the xylem of the host plant, which leads to a severe reduction in plant vigor and sugar accumulation, directly impacting the final yield and quality of the raw material.

The biology of Mahanarva fimbriolata is characterized by a nymphal stage that lives within protective spittle masses secreted by the insects themselves. These masses provide protection from predators and desiccation. The insect undergoes five nymphal instars before reaching the adult stage, with the entire cycle being highly influenced by temperature and precipitation levels in the environment.

Damage symptoms begin with yellowing of the leaves, followed by stunted growth and drying of the stems. In heavily infested areas, the plant's photosynthetic capacity drops sharply, leading to significant biomass loss. The accumulation of secondary pathogens in the feeding wounds often results in the death of the stool, complicating recovery and requiring replanting.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the recommended approach for controlling this pest. Key tactics include the widespread use of the biological control agent Metarhizium anisopliae, a fungus that targets both nymphs and adults. Chemical control with registered insecticides is employed when threshold levels are exceeded. Furthermore, maintaining optimal irrigation schedules and monitoring population density through field traps are critical for long-term successful management.
