Malachite beetle

The malachite beetle (Malachius bipustulatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Melyridae. This small beetle is frequently found in agricultural landscapes, meadows, and gardens across Europe, where it interacts with various blooming plants throughout the spring and early summer seasons.

Adult beetles are characterized by their brilliant metallic green color and distinctive red or orange markings on the tips of their elytra. They typically measure between 5 and 7 millimeters in length. While the adults are often found on flowers, the larval stage is predatory and primarily dwells in sheltered environments such as under bark or in decaying plant matter.

The damage caused by this insect is primarily associated with the adult stage. The beetles feed on the floral parts of plants, including stamens, petals, and developing ovaries. This behavior is particularly detrimental to crops such as rapeseed, mustard, and various legumes, where the destruction of reproductive structures directly leads to reduced yields.

The life cycle typically involves one generation per year. Adult emergence usually coincides with the peak flowering period of many agricultural crops in late spring. While the larvae act as beneficial predators by feeding on other small arthropods, the adult feeding habits on crops necessitate careful monitoring by farmers and agronomists.

Effective pest management for Malachius bipustulatus relies on systematic scouting during the sensitive flowering stages of the crop.
