Description

The Cabbage moth (Latin: Mamestra brassicae) is a member of the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a highly destructive polyphagous pest, widely distributed across Europe and Asia, known for attacking a diverse range of agricultural and horticultural crops.

The larvae, or caterpillars, are notorious for their broad host range. They target cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, sugar beet, spinach, tomatoes, and various ornamental plants. The pest thrives in diverse environments, making it a significant challenge for both large-scale commercial farming and home gardening.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The moth usually produces one to two generations per year. Overwintering occurs in the soil as pupae. Emerging adults are nocturnal, showing high activity during warm summer nights when they feed and mate before laying clusters of eggs on host foliage.

Damage is primarily caused by larvae, which go through several instars. Young caterpillars skeletonize the leaves, while older, more voracious larvae bore deep into the heads of cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables. This destructive feeding behavior leads to significant economic losses by rendering produce unmarketable and susceptible to secondary infections like soft rot.
