Description

Marriottella is a genus of small herbivorous insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs. These insects are distinguished by the intricate, net-like pattern on their wings. In an agronomic context, they are recognized as specialized pests that can cause significant physiological damage to various ornamental and vegetable crops.

The pest primarily targets plant species within the Asteraceae family and several other perennials. By piercing plant tissues with their specialized mouthparts, Marriottella feed on the cell sap, particularly from the underside of leaves. This feeding behavior disrupts photosynthesis, weakens the plant's structural integrity, and results in reduced overall yield and aesthetic decline in ornamental plants.

The biology and development of this pest are highly sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly heat and humidity. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females typically deposit eggs in the leaf tissue or on the lower surface, which provides protection from natural predators and environmental stressors. Warm, dry weather conditions significantly accelerate their reproductive cycle.

Damage symptoms manifest as chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, often referred to as stippling, which gives the foliage a pale, mottled appearance. As the infestation progresses, leaves may become necrotic, curl, or drop prematurely. Furthermore, the accumulation of dark fecal spots on the leaves can lead to secondary infections, such as sooty mold, which severely reduces the commercial value of the crop.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Marriottella populations. Agronomists recommend a combination of cultural and chemical interventions to maintain plant health. Key control strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring of the lower leaf surfaces for signs of nymphal activity.
  • Removal of host weeds that serve as reservoirs for the pest during the off-season.
  • Application of systemic or contact insecticides when populations exceed economic thresholds.
  • Promoting natural biological control agents like lacewings and predatory bugs.
  • Maintaining optimal irrigation to reduce environmental stress on the plants.
