The oat gall midge (Mayetiola joannissi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as an economically significant threat specifically for oat crops, causing damage in various regions where this cereal is commonly cultivated.
The primary host for this species is the common oat (Avena sativa). The larvae feed on the internal tissues and sap of the stems, which disrupts the normal translocation of nutrients and causes severe physiological stress to the developing plant.
The life cycle of Mayetiola joannissi is synchronized with the growth stages of oats. Adults emerge and lay eggs on the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae move under the leaf sheaths to feed. They remain in this protected position during their larval stage, eventually pupating within the deformed stems before the next generation of adults emerges.
Symptoms of infestation include stunted growth, yellowing, and necrosis of the central leaf. The plant often exhibits characteristic swelling or distortion of the stem at the site of larval feeding. Heavy infestations lead to lodging and the production of poorly filled grains or complete failure of ear development, resulting in significant yield losses.

- plowing down crop residues after harvest to bury overwintering larvae;
