Large marsh grasshoppers
Mecostethus
Description
The genus Mecostethus belongs to the family Acrididae within the order Orthoptera. Commonly known as large marsh grasshoppers, these insects are typically found in moist environments, including wet meadows, marshes, and riparian habitats. While they are not as migratory as some infamous locust species, their presence in high densities can significantly affect agricultural productivity in low-lying areas or near wetland margins.
The biological cycle of Mecostethus involves incomplete metamorphosis. They overwinter in the egg stage, typically buried in the soil or within dense vegetation litter. In the spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages before reaching adulthood. Throughout their life cycle, they are voracious feeders on grasses and sedges, which constitutes the core of their diet.
These pests primarily target cereal crops, forage grasses, and natural pastures. The damage is characterized by ragged leaf margins and the consumption of large sections of the foliage. In severe infestation scenarios, the biomass reduction on pastures can lead to significant economic losses for livestock farming, as the nutritional value and yield of the forage are substantially degraded.
Management strategies for Mecostethus emphasize early detection and habitat modification. Since these insects favor wet, undisturbed areas, land management practices such as drainage of swampy spots, regular mowing of ditch banks, and late-autumn cultivation are highly effective in disrupting their life cycle and reducing survival rates of egg clusters in the soil.
Chemical control should be considered as a last resort when populations exceed the economic threshold. Insecticides targeting the nymphal stages are more effective than targeting adults, as nymphs are less mobile and more susceptible to contact poisoning. It is crucial to use selective products that minimize the impact on beneficial insects and pollinators in the surrounding ecosystem to maintain integrated pest management balance.
