Description

The Southern flannel moth (Megalopyge opercularis), also known as the puss caterpillar, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Megalopygidae. This species is recognized globally as a significant pest of landscape and ornamental trees, as well as a hazard to humans due to its potent stinging hairs.

This pest affects a wide variety of woody plants, including oaks, elms, citrus trees, roses, and various shade trees. The caterpillars are highly voracious, feeding on the leaves of host plants. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and reduces its overall vigor.

The life cycle of this moth is typical for Lepidoptera, progressing through egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on leaves, which hatch into caterpillars that grow through several instars.
