Humpbacked fly
Megaselia
Description
Taxonomic position: The genus Megaselia belongs to the family Phoridae, within the order Diptera. These small flies are commonly known as humpbacked flies due to the distinctive arched shape of their thorax. The genus is extremely diverse, with many species acting as saprophages, though several have become significant agricultural pests when conditions favor their proliferation.
Host plants and crops: The most significant impact of Megaselia is observed in the commercial mushroom industry, specifically affecting button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms. Additionally, they pose a threat to various vegetable crops grown in greenhouses, such as cucumbers and legumes, where larvae can attack seeds, roots, and tender stems planted in nutrient-rich soil.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in decaying organic matter or moist soil. Under optimal warm temperatures (around 20–25°C), the generation cycle can be completed in less than three weeks. This high reproductive rate allows populations to explode rapidly, especially in poorly sanitized cultivation environments.
Damage and pest status: Damage is primarily caused by the larval stage. In mushroom production, larvae tunnel through the mycelium, destroying the food base, and bore into mushroom caps, rendering the crop unmarketable. In vegetable seedlings, larvae feed on germinating seeds and root systems, leading to damping-off, stunted plant growth, and reduced crop density.
Control measures: Management of Megaselia populations relies on integrated pest management (IPM) practices:
- Ensuring thorough pasteurization of substrates to eliminate eggs and larvae.
- Regular use of yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce adult fly numbers.
- Maintaining proper ventilation to prevent excessive humidity in growing areas.
- Application of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic nematodes, to target larvae in the growing medium.
