Japanese seed wasp

The Japanese seed wasp (Megastigmus inamurae) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Torymidae. This highly specialized pest targets the seeds of various conifer species, particularly those within the Cupressus and Thuja genera, posing a significant threat to forestry operations and commercial tree nurseries.

The primary hosts of this insect include the Mediterranean cypress and Arizona cypress, along with several varieties of arborvitae. The larvae of the wasp develop exclusively inside the seed, consuming the endosperm entirely. This damage renders the seeds non-viable, effectively preventing natural regeneration and complicating seed production for forest restoration efforts.

The life cycle of the wasp is tightly synchronized with the phenology of its host trees. Adult wasps emerge during the spring, aligning with the development of young cones. The females deposit their eggs directly into the developing, soft seeds. Larvae spend their entire development cycle, including the winter period, feeding inside the seed, and pupation occurs only in the following spring.

The damage caused by the pest is often difficult to detect during a routine visual inspection of the cones. The most prominent sign of infestation is the appearance of small, round exit holes created by adults as they bore their way out of the seeds. In severe cases, the infestation levels can lead to the loss of up to 90% of the total seed crop in affected stands.

Management and control strategies require an integrated approach, as chemical pesticides have limited efficacy during the adult flight period due to environmental constraints. Recommended practices include:

• Sanitation, such as the collection and disposal of infested cones.
• Monitoring populations using pheromone or sticky traps.
• Application of biological insecticides during the peak emergence window.
• Selection of resistant tree genotypes for reforestation projects.
