Description
Megastigmus spermotrophus, commonly known as the Douglas fir seed chalcid, is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Torymidae family. It is a highly specialized seed pest that primarily targets the seeds of the Douglas fir tree, acting as a major limiting factor in seed production.
The primary host for this pest is the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Originally native to North America, the insect has been widely introduced to Europe and other regions, where it now persists in nurseries and natural forests, causing significant losses to reproductive potential.
The biological cycle is strictly dependent on the host tree's cone development. The female uses her ovipositor to pierce the cone scales and deposit eggs directly into the developing seed. The larva consumes the interior of the seed, eventually pupating inside it. Some individuals may undergo diapause, remaining in the seed for more than one year.
The damage caused by this insect is classified as internal and hidden. Externally, cones show no signs of infestation, which complicates quality control during seed extraction. The primary impact is a severe reduction in seed viability, which can render entire seed batches unsuitable for forestry use.
