Spruce seed chalcid

Megastigmus strobilobius

Description

Systematic position
The spruce seed chalcid (Megastigmus strobilobius) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Torymidae. It is a highly specialized seed predator that has evolved to exploit the reproductive structures of conifers for its survival and larval development.

Affected crops
The primary host for this pest is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). The insect specifically targets the seeds, making it a critical threat in forestry nurseries and seed orchards where the production of high-quality seeds is essential for reforestation efforts.

Biology and life cycle
This species typically completes one generation per year. Adult females emerge in the spring, coinciding with the development of young cones, and deposit eggs directly into the developing seeds. The larva feeds entirely within the seed, consuming the endosperm. Pupation occurs inside the seed, and the adult insect eventually emerges by chewing an exit hole through the seed coat.

Nature of damage and economic importance
Damage is often hidden, as infested cones remain externally normal. The pest causes significant economic losses by drastically reducing seed germination rates and quality. Because the infestation is internal, it can be easily overlooked until seed extraction and processing, complicating the quality control of forest seeds.

Control measures

  • Effective seed orchard sanitation by removing infested or fallen cones.
  • Implementation of monitoring traps to track adult emergence periods.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight of adults in seed orchards.
  • Sorting and X-ray inspection of seeds to identify and discard infested batches.
  • Encouraging natural biological control agents that target chalcid larvae.
