Two-banded slug

The two-banded slug (Meghimatium bilineatum) is a gastropod mollusk of the family Philomycidae known for being a significant pest in both agricultural and home garden settings. It is morphologically characterized by two distinctive dark stripes running along its back. These slugs prefer humid environments and are most active during moist, cool weather conditions, making them a recurring problem for many growers.

This pest has a wide range of host plants, showing little discrimination in its diet. It readily feeds on various vegetables, including leafy greens, brassicas, and tomatoes. Additionally, it causes severe damage to berries like strawberries and many ornamental plants. Because of its nocturnal and moisture-dependent nature, it thrives in gardens that use irrigation or during rainy summer seasons, leading to significant economic loss.

The life cycle and biology of this slug are closely linked to moisture availability. They spend daylight hours hiding under debris, mulch, logs, or deep in the soil to prevent desiccation. They reproduce by laying eggs in moist, protected soil sites. Once hatched, the young slugs grow rapidly, consuming large amounts of plant biomass to support their metabolic needs, especially during the peak growth season.

Damage caused by Meghimatium bilineatum is characterized by large, irregular holes in foliage and feeding marks on fruits and stems. A tell-tale sign of their presence is the characteristic trail of dried mucus left on plant surfaces. Beyond direct consumption, these pests facilitate the spread of fungal and bacterial infections by creating entry points in plant tissue through their feeding wounds.
