Melanagromyza websteri

Systematic position. Melanagromyza websteri belongs to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. These insects are commonly known as leaf miners, as the larvae spend their entire developmental phase feeding internally on plant tissues, effectively protected from many environmental factors and contact pesticides.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are plants within the Asteraceae family. It can be found on a variety of perennial wildflowers, cultivated ornamental plants, and certain weeds, which often serve as primary infection reservoirs in agricultural and landscape settings.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs inside the plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae create tunnels (mines) as they consume the plant's parenchyma. The larval stage is the most damaging phase of the insect’s life cycle, lasting until pupation occurs either within the leaf mines or the surrounding soil.

Damage and pest status. Infestations are characterized by serpentine mines visible on the leaves. These tunnels disrupt the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, leading to localized chlorosis, necrosis, and premature leaf drop. In high numbers, the larvae can compromise the structural integrity of stems and significantly diminish the aesthetic value of ornamental specimens.

Management and control. Controlling Melanagromyza websteri requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on sanitation and targeted treatment:

• Removing and destroying infested plant material to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak activity of adult flies.
• Deploying yellow sticky traps to detect and monitor the emergence of adults.
• Maintaining healthy soil and plant vigor to improve tolerance against larval feeding.
• Practicing crop rotation to reduce the population density of local pest reservoirs.
