Marbled White

The Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) is a butterfly belonging to the Nymphalidae family within the order Lepidoptera. While primarily recognized as a characteristic species of grasslands and meadows, it can occasionally act as a minor pest when larvae populations become dense in areas adjacent to cultivated grasses or cereal crops.

This species primarily feeds on a variety of wild and cultivated grasses. Known host plants include various species of fescue (Festuca), timothy (Phleum), and meadow-grass (Poa). While their impact is usually localized, intensive grazing by caterpillars can affect the yield of pasture lands and adjacent forage crops.

The life cycle involves a single annual generation. Adults are active during the summer months, typically from June to July. Females deposit eggs directly onto the host plants or nearby soil. The species overwinters as a young larva, resuming its development and feeding activity in the following spring until pupation occurs in early summer.

The damage caused by the larvae involves the consumption of leaf blades. Caterpillars are nocturnal feeders, creating irregular notches on the edges of grass leaves or skeletonizing the foliage. Significant feeding pressure can reduce the overall vegetative mass of the crop, impacting the nutritional quality and volume of forage production in localized outbreaks.

Management strategies for this species focus on cultural practices rather than chemical intervention. Maintaining proper field hygiene by managing weeds and surrounding grass borders is the most effective approach. Timely harvesting of hay crops helps disrupt the development of the larvae. Chemical control is rarely necessary and should be reserved only for severe infestations where the economic threshold for forage loss is exceeded.
