Description

The evening brown (Melanitis leda) is a species of butterfly in the family Nymphalidae and subfamily Satyrinae. In an agricultural context, it is recognized as a pest of various graminaceous crops, particularly rice, across tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia. The adult butterflies are known for their leaf-like wing underside, which provides effective camouflage among dried grasses and crop debris.

The primary hosts of this species include a wide range of Poaceae. It causes significant economic damage to rice crops (Oryza sativa), but also attacks sugar cane, millet, and several wild grass species. When conditions are favorable, the population can increase rapidly, leading to outbreaks that impact crop health and final yields in high-density production zones.

The biology of Melanitis leda is characterized by a life cycle comprising eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Females typically lay their eggs on the underside of the host plant leaves. The larvae go through several instars and are nocturnal, feeding during the night and seeking shelter near the base of the plant during the day, which makes them difficult to spot during routine daytime field inspections.

Damage is caused primarily by the larvae, which feed on the leaf blades of the host plants. In severe infestations, the larvae may skeletonize the leaves, drastically reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity. This damage weakens the crop, leads to stunted growth, and significantly impacts grain development, resulting in reduced weight and quality of the harvested rice.
