The black pecan aphid, scientifically known as Melanocallis caryaefoliae, is a significant pest of the pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis) and other related species. As a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family, this insect is distinguished by its dark, almost black color, which makes it distinct from other aphid species found on the same hosts.
The life cycle of this species is highly synchronized with the growth stages of the pecan tree. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, typically hidden within bark crevices. As trees flush in the spring, nymphs hatch and begin feeding.
