Haddock

Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) is a commercially important marine fish belonging to the cod family (Gadidae). It is crucial to state that this species is not a plant pest; it is an aquatic organism that occupies a significant role in marine food webs. Any reference to this species in agricultural science is strictly for informational purposes, as it bears no relation to terrestrial crop management.

In terms of systematic classification, the species belongs to the order Gadiformes and the family Gadidae. It is a monotypic genus, meaning Melanogrammus contains only this single species. A distinct morphological feature is a dark blotch above the pectoral fin, often referred to as the devil's thumbprint, which serves as a reliable diagnostic character.

The biology and life cycle of the haddock are defined by its benthic lifestyle in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas.
