Melanoides

Systematic position: Melanoides is a genus of freshwater snails belonging to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Thiaridae. The most common species is Melanoides tuberculata, known as the red-rimmed melania. These snails are highly adaptable, making them a common invasive species in man-made water environments.

Crops affected: While not a field pest, Melanoides snails are considered a nuisance in controlled environment agriculture, specifically in hydroponic systems, aquaponics, and vertical farming setups. They can damage the delicate root hairs of young plants and cause significant disruptions to the mechanical components of irrigation systems.

Biology and life cycle: These snails are ovoviviparous and reproduce parthenogenetically, meaning a single individual can colonize a new habitat and form a massive population rapidly. They are nocturnal and spend much of their time buried in substrates or inside pipes, which makes them very difficult to eradicate once they have established a stable colony within a water system.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary harm caused by Melanoides is the clogging of irrigation emitters, pumps, and sensors due to their shells and organic waste. Their presence alters the chemical balance of nutrient solutions, potentially leading to root rot and other phytosanitary issues, which reduces the health and growth rate of plants grown in protected environments.

Control measures: Effective management strategies include the following steps:

• Regular mechanical cleaning of all nutrient tanks and substrate containers.
• Implementation of fine-mesh filtration to prevent snails from entering supply lines.
• Total system sterilization during the rotation period between crops.
• Monitoring of incoming water quality and quarantine of any new biological materials or plants introduced to the system.
