The Arctic spur-throated grasshopper (Melanoplus frigidus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is native to cold, northern, or high-altitude environments, where it has evolved to thrive in rigorous climates while occasionally reaching high population densities that impact local vegetation.

As a polyphagous pest, this grasshopper feeds on various plant species, including major cereal crops, pasture grasses, and vegetables. Its feeding behavior often intensifies when natural forage is scarce, leading the insects to aggregate on cultivated fields and consume both emerging seedlings and mature plant tissues.

The life cycle of Melanoplus frigidus follows the standard orthopteran pattern with incomplete metamorphosis. The eggs are the overwintering stage, deposited in the soil. Upon hatching, the nymphs undergo five distinct instar stages. Their development speed is strictly dependent on ambient temperature, making population peaks highly correlated with warm summer weather.
