Melanoplus infantilis is a species of short-horned grasshopper belonging to the family Acrididae, order Orthoptera. It is primarily found in the grassland ecosystems of North America. This insect is known for its resilience and adaptability to changing environmental conditions, which contributes to its status as a significant pest in agricultural regions.

This pest causes damage to a variety of agricultural crops, with a particular preference for small grains such as wheat, barley, and oats. In addition to cultivated crops, it frequently feeds on rangeland grasses and various weeds. When population levels are high, the grasshopper can devastate entire fields, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.

The life cycle follows a pattern of incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in the soil during late summer and autumn, where they overwinter. With the arrival of spring temperatures, the nymphs hatch and begin their feeding cycle. They typically go through five instars before reaching the adult stage, at which point they become highly mobile.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of leaf tissue, stems, and reproductive parts of the plants. Early instar nymphs often feed on young foliage, while older nymphs and adults cause more extensive damage by stripping the plants and clipping grain heads. This feeding behavior reduces plant vigor, hinders growth, and can result in significant yield loss if left unmanaged.
