The Nevada sage grasshopper (Melanoplus rugglesi) is a member of the Acrididae family within the order Orthoptera. This species is historically recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly known for its periodic outbreaks that can lead to large-scale migration and widespread destruction of vegetation.
This grasshopper is a generalist herbivore. It infests a wide range of host plants, including native rangeland grasses, cereal crops such as wheat and barley, and various broad-leaved crops. During infestation events, these insects consume nearly all green tissue in their path, causing immense economic disruption.
The biology of Melanoplus rugglesi follows an incomplete metamorphosis cycle. Females lay egg pods in the soil during the late summer, where the eggs overwinter safely. Nymphs emerge in the spring, typically undergoing five instars of development before maturing into winged adults capable of long-distance movement.
The damage caused by this insect involves aggressive defoliation and the destruction of plant stems and reproductive structures. Beyond the direct loss of crop yield, the intensity of their feeding can leave fields bare, significantly increasing soil erosion risks and reducing the recovery rate of pasture ecosystems.

- Targeted insecticide applications when nymphs are in the early instars, as they are most susceptible then.
