Description
Systematic position: The species belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae. While widely studied in ecology, its larval stage can sometimes conflict with agricultural practices when it targets specific host plants that are either cultivated or serve as essential components of local biodiversity.
Biology and life cycle: The adults are characterized by orange wings with a black checkered pattern. The species completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in communal silken webs spun on host plants, which provides them with protection against environmental stressors until spring, when they resume active feeding.
Host plants and damage: The primary larval host plants include species of Plantago (plantain), Veronica, and sometimes Linum (flax).
