The knapweed fritillary (Melitaea phoebe) is a butterfly belonging to the Nymphalidae family. While primarily known to entomologists, its larval stage can act as a pest when populations spike, causing localized damage to specific types of vegetation, particularly those within the Asteraceae family.
Crops frequently targeted by the larvae include sunflowers and various medicinal herbs related to knapweed and other thistles. The caterpillars feed on the leaves, starting from the margins or creating holes throughout the leaf tissue, which can significantly reduce the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, typically featuring one or two generations per year.
