Description
The genus Mellicta belongs to the Nymphalidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Often referred to as fritillaries, these butterflies have larvae that can occasionally impact plant health. While many species are ecologically significant and rare, some populations can cause damage when they switch to cultivated crops or managed ornamental vegetation.
The primary hosts for Mellicta larvae include various herbaceous perennials, particularly those belonging to the Plantaginaceae and Lamiaceae families. These plants serve as essential nutritional sources that support the rapid development of the larvae from hatching through to the pupation phase.
The biological cycle of Mellicta consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Once spring temperatures increase, larvae become active, feeding voraciously before forming pupae attached to vegetation.

Significant damage reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, potentially leading to weakened stems and reduced overall yield in heavily infested areas.
