Superb lyrebird

Systematic position. The superb lyrebird (lat. Menura novaehollandiae) belongs to the Passeriformes order and the Menuridae family. Although it is an iconic species, its natural foraging behavior can lead to significant conflict in horticultural settings, where the bird acts as a disruptive agent to managed vegetation and ornamental plantings.

Affected crops. The lyrebird primarily targets ornamental flower beds, young shrub nurseries, and newly established turf. By foraging in the topsoil, the bird disturbs the root systems of delicate bulbous plants and seedlings. This disruption often leads to desiccation of the plants and severe damage to the aesthetic layout of managed gardens.

Biology and life cycle. This large, ground-dwelling bird is highly active in the forest litter. During the breeding season, males construct and maintain display mounds by clearing large patches of ground. The constant scraping and scratching of the soil during these territorial displays coincide with spring gardening cycles, creating a direct conflict with agricultural and horticultural activities.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The primary economic impact stems from the mechanical destruction of plant roots and the exposure of soil to erosion. Plants damaged by the lyrebird’s foraging often fail to recover due to root trauma and inability to access soil nutrients. The financial cost involves not only the loss of specific plants but also the intensive labor required to repair damaged garden beds.

Protection measures. Managing the presence of these birds requires proactive site protection strategies:

• Installing physical barriers or heavy-duty wire mesh around sensitive planting zones.
• Applying large-grade mulch that is difficult for birds to scratch through.
• Utilizing motion-activated sprinkler systems to deter birds from specific garden areas.
• Implementing effective fencing or enclosure systems for high-value ornamental plant nurseries.
