Description

Systematic position: The wheat stem fly (Meromyza saltatrix) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Chloropidae. It is a widespread pest that specifically targets cereal crops, posing a consistent threat to wheat and barley production throughout its range.

Host crops: The primary hosts for this pest include bread wheat, durum wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The fly also utilizes various wild grasses such as couch grass and brome, which act as vital habitats that allow the population to persist between cropping seasons.

Biology and lifecycle: The species typically completes one to two generations annually, depending on the local climate. Larvae overwinter inside the stems of winter cereals or wild grasses. Pupation occurs in the spring, followed by the emergence of adults that lay eggs on the leaves of young host plants. The hatching larvae then migrate inside the stem to begin feeding.

Damage and economic impact: The larva feeds on the soft tissue within the stem, destroying the growth point or the developing ear. This feeding pattern causes the central leaf to wither and the ear to turn white and sterile, a condition known as «whiteheads». Infested plants fail to fill with grain, causing significant yield losses and reducing the market value of the harvest.

Control measures: Managing the wheat stem fly requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include early sowing of winter crops, thorough weed management to remove host reservoirs, and deep plowing to bury infested stubble. When population thresholds are exceeded, the application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight period is recommended to prevent significant crop damage.
