Description

The European bee-eater (lat. Merops apiaster) is a member of the Coraciiformes order and the Meropidae family. While these birds are significant insectivores, in agricultural and apiary management, they are considered a major pest due to their intense consumption of honey bees, which significantly disrupts the stability of apiaries.

Biologically, the species is highly adapted for aerial hunting. They possess specialized physiological traits that allow them to catch flying insects with extreme precision. Their diet consists almost exclusively of Hymenoptera, meaning that near honey bee colonies, the birds quickly focus their foraging efforts on the available workforce of the hive.

The life cycle of the European bee-eater involves colonial nesting in sandbanks or cliff faces. The nesting season is the most critical period, as parent birds require large volumes of food to feed their brood. During this time, they exhibit high site fidelity and territorial hunting behavior, which keeps them near the same apiary until the chicks have fledged.

The damage caused by these birds is quantifiable through the sudden decline in bee traffic at hive entrances. Excessive predation disrupts the honey production cycle, reduces pollination services for nearby crops, and weakens the colony's ability to maintain sufficient honey stores, eventually leading to lower survival rates during the winter months.

Control measures are strictly non-lethal, focusing on exclusion and deterrents. Beekeepers utilize physical barriers like netting to protect hives, alongside acoustic deterrent devices that emit predator calls. Monitoring the presence of nesting sites nearby allows for proactive management, such as relocating hives before the peak nesting season begins.
