Mesopolobus zetterstedtii
Mesopolobus zetterstedtii
Description
Mesopolobus zetterstedtii is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Pteromalidae. While many members of the Pteromalidae family are beneficial parasitoids, this specific species acts as a significant seed pest, particularly targeting the seeds of coniferous tree species.
The primary host for this insect is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). Adult females insert their ovipositors into the developing cones to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the seeds, consuming the internal tissues. This feeding process destroys the embryo and endosperm, rendering the seed completely non-viable for germination.
The biological cycle of this pest is synchronized with the phenology of its host tree. The insect typically undergoes one generation per year. It overwinters as a mature larva inside the infested seed. Pupation occurs within the seed coat during the spring, followed by the emergence of adults that seek out young cones to initiate the reproductive cycle.
The damage caused by Mesopolobus zetterstedtii is primarily economic, as it leads to substantial losses in seed production areas and forestry nurseries. Because the larvae feed internally and do not leave external signs of damage on the cone surface until the emergence holes are created, the infestation is often detected too late during the seed processing stage.
Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. These include the timely harvesting of cones before the insect completes its development and emerges. Proper seed storage conditions are crucial to prevent further infestation. In high-value seed orchards, chemical monitoring and the application of targeted insecticides during the cone-development phase are often required to maintain seed quality.
