Mesopsis laticornis is a grasshopper species belonging to the family Acrididae within the order Orthoptera. This insect is recognized as a pest in various agricultural regions, where it impacts cereal production. As a non-migratory grasshopper, its impact is usually localized, but it can cause severe damage when environmental factors favor population surges.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the Poaceae family. These include essential crops such as wheat, barley, and rye. The pest is frequently found in grasslands adjacent to arable land, from where it spreads into the fields, causing significant foliage loss to young crops in their early stages of growth and during the grain-filling period.

The life cycle begins with the overwintering of eggs deposited in the soil. Upon the arrival of spring, nymphs emerge and proceed through five developmental stages (instars). The duration of these stages is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels; hot and dry climates significantly accelerate the maturation process, leading to larger, more voracious populations.

The damage caused by Mesopsis laticornis involves the consumption of leaf blades, which reduces the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis. Significant defoliation negatively affects the overall vigor and yield potential of the crop. In cases of high infestation, the pests may also target the developing ears, directly affecting the quantity and quality of the final harvest.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Cultural practices, such as autumn plowing and the management of field borders to eliminate breeding grounds, are fundamental in preventing population spikes.
